PDF Annotator 3 puts finished PDF files through the wringer. They can be completely rewritten and commented on your screen. Comments, handwritten remarks, callouts and entire drawings can be added as you please to the supposedly immutable pages. Selected passages can even be highlighted. The new Build 320 is a marked improvement over the recently released Version 3.

Whenever documents are circulated among several persons, Adobe’s Portable Document Format (PDF) usually comes into play. PDF files can be viewed on various operating systems and in any kind of environment. They preserve the original layout and require only the free reader software, which is available for all systems.

Problem: PDF files are supposed to be unmodifiable. Their content can be read, copied and printed, but not edited. If a text needs to be proofread or a document needs to be annotated, usually the only solution is to print and edit the hard copy.

In an age of paperless offices and rapid exchange of data over large distances, PDF Annotator 3 soon becomes indispensable. This Windows tool opens existing PDF files and allows them to be edited directly. With PDF Annotator 3, each page can be displayed on the screen, and can be revised, edited, commented, or corrected. Users can highlight text passages, circle them, and add handwritten comments. Likewise, it becomes a simple matter to add drawings to pages, insert callouts or type notes in the margin.

At the end, the changes can be saved to the same PDF file and forwarded to colleagues and co-workers. The software has built-in support for Tablet PCs and can be controlled with multi-touch gestures.

PDF Annotator 3 Build 320: Overview of new features

PDF Annotator is a unique Windows program with specialized capabilities. However, it is always being further developed to allow additional productivity and ease of use. The new Build 320 contains the following enhancements:
  • PDF Annotator’s user interface can now be customized by power users. Previously fixed toolbars can be minimized to a single line or completely removed from the screen.
  • New settings are now available for various tools—for example, to preserve the aspect ratio of stamps or of selected comments when increasing or decreasing their size.
  • Text annotations: Adjusting the frames to fit the text now requires only a single click.
  • Stamps within a large collection can now be given a description.
  • For Slate Tablet PCs, there is a new setting to save space: the sidebar dynamically disappears upon rotation to portrait format.
  • Two-finger scrolling is now available for multi-touch devices. The program supports the latest hardware and Windows 7 features.
  • The new build supports right-to-left text flow for Arabic and Hebrew.

Oliver Grahl of GRAHL software design: "All these enhancements are the direct result of our users’ requests. We listened to them—and we have implemented their most important suggestions right away."
